Dana Montana Especial is an organic, washed coffee produced by the MOCABE, Movimiento Campesino de Belisario (Belisario Farmers' Movement) cooperative in the Motozintla and Siltepec regions of Chiapas, Mexico. Founded in 1999, MOCABE now includes more than 500 smallholder farming families who work together to improve coffee quality, secure better prices, and strengthen their communities. Many members also grow corn and beans alongside coffee, continuing a long tradition of diversified family farming.
The coffee is named after Atlas Coffee importer Dana, who earned the nickname "Dana Montana" during her first sourcing trip to Mexico after producers learned she had spent much of her life in Montana riding horses. An exporter even printed vintage photos of Dana on horseback onto the coffee bags, and the name stuck. Horses and mules remain an important part of daily life in rural Chiapas, making the name a fitting connection between the producers and the people who source their coffee.
What makes Dana Montana unique is both its story and its consistency. Produced by a cooperative dedicated to supporting smallholder farmers, it offers the clean, balanced character that Chiapas is known for, with the quality of southern Mexico's coffee-growing region and the long-standing relationships behind its production.
