Finca La Esperanza is located in Acevedo, Huila—the second-largest coffee-producing municipality in Colombia. The farm sits in the vereda La Carbona at 1,400 meters above sea level. It consists of 19 hectares, though only 5 hectares situated on a beautiful hillside are planted with coffee. The farm cultivates a blend of Castillo and Colombia varieties.  Anselmo Moreno, the 69-year-old owner of the farm, is a deeply respected individual and a true coffee lover. A second-generation coffee producer, Don Anselmo left his profession as a dentist to dedicate himself fully to the farm. In the beginning, he sold his coffee cherries to other producers who had wet mills. After our first meeting, he was inspired to invest in his own equipment—he bought a pulper and began processing his own coffee. In his first year, he dried the coffee on nylon sheets laid on the ground. Later, he constructed a more formal drying area with raised beds. Don Anselmo has five children. His fourth child, Lorena Moreno, has worked closely with him to make Finca La Esperanza a profitable farm known for producing excellent coffees. Together, they improved the wet mill to make processing more efficient. Lorena previously worked as a coffee instructor at the SENA institution, collaborating with many small producers on various coffee projects. Though she no longer works with SENA, she remains committed to supporting young people and encouraging their involvement in coffee. Her most recent project—soon to launch with other producers in Acevedo—aims to create a space where young people and children of coffee farmers can learn the skill of cupping. This coffee was one of many that stopped being purchased during the pandemic. However, for both us and Don Anselmo, it has been a great joy to resume our relationship, and we hope to continue it for many years to come.
