The Muungano Cooperative, with 4,230 members, is divided into 16 sectors - each with their own cherry collection site - where harvested coffee cherries are delivered to each day directly after harvest. From there, they are transported to one of the Cooperative’s four wet mills, each named for the municipality it resides in. To transport the coffee to the dry mill in Goma, some members must deliver these cherries by large human-powdered boats, navigating the shores of Lake Kivu. This trip takes a day from Kiniezire.
The advantages of belonging to a Cooperative are various. One major role that the Muungano cooperative plays in the daily lives of its members is providing transportation for those that need it. Some members live upwards of 25 miles away from the farm they work at.
Staying true to their namesake, the Muungano (“togetherness” in Swahili) Cooperative employs the GALS (Gender Action Learning System) program, which focuses on how to work together to achieve unified goals, identifying opportunities and threats that they might face, and planning out how to address them. Half of the co-op’s members are women.
