This is the second year of our wonderful partnership with Brian Gakunga and Kiriga Estate, and the peaberry lot that we loved so much is back and tasting as awesome as ever! Kiriga Estate was founded around 1954 by British colonialists. Brian’s father purchased the estate in 1976, and passed it on to his son in 2014. Though the estate is technically located in Murang'a county, its true location is a bit of an open debate. Kiriga Estate had long been considered part of the Thika district; until the area was redistricted and the estate’s southern border, the Chania River, became the designated border between the two districts. Thika and Murang’a have tremendous historical importance within Kenya, as they were two of the first areas in which coffee was cultivated. The classic memoir Out of Africa, which is set in Thika, chronicles an early coffee plantation and is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of coffee.
In the dry fragrance, the freshly ground coffee reminds us of peach, green grape and has a hint of green tomato. In the cup, the grape remains, and is accompanied by delicious notes of blackberry and pomelo. This is a wonderfully lively coffee with a light, juicy mouthfeel; a crisp citrus acidity and a refreshingly smooth finish.
