Going all the way back to 2006, we’ve made it a point each and every year to feature at least one coffee from our great friend Edwin Martinez’s beautiful farm, Finca Vista Hermosa. To call this farm beautiful is no understatement. Nestled high in the clouded peaks of the Cuchumatanes mountain range in northwestern Huehuetenango, Finca Vista Hermosa is named for the stunningly picturesque views to which words can do no justice.
Our Michicoy lot is from the original part of the farm that was purchased by Edwin’s grandfather Felipe in 1956. According to Edwin, Michicoy is grown at the steepest part of the farm, and only locals and experienced climbers are permitted to walk the boundaries. The slope on which the coffee is grown is so steep that they planted a dense canopy of shade to help protect against erosion. Between the mountainside and the shade canopy, the coffee is exposed to almost no direct sunlight. Edwin insists this slows down the development of the coffee cherries, and results in a rich, sugary-sweet coffee that one might associate with coffees that are grown much higher. In the freshly-ground aroma you’ll notice delicious notes of roasted almond, milk chocolate and freshly-baked cinnamon-raisin bread. In the cup, the pronounced sweetness immediately shines through. The pleasing almond note gains layers of complexity with undercurrents of walnut and toasted rice. The wonderful milk chocolate sweetness, which is accompanied by an hint of toasted marshmallow and an apple-like acidity, carries through to a richly clean finish.
