Turihamwe means “together” in Kirundi, the local language in Burundi. The owners of this coffee mill chose this name because the nine women pooled their money together in order to purchase it. Turihamwe is Burundi’s rst women owned and operated coffee mill.
Working closely with Artisan Coffee Importers the owners of Turihamwe have capitalized on Artisan’s bonus structure by insuring high quality coffees are being grown and processed by the mill. This extra bonus per pound is what gave Turihamwe the ability to build the mill and they have plans to build a second mill in the near future.
Their 3 year goal is to increase their specialty coffee production from 30 bags to 1200 bags per year. 4500lb to 180,000lbs; it’s a big jump but with their skills and support of their community we have no doubts on their success.
