Our Kenya Nyeri Thageini peaberry is a tremendous example of the unbelievable quality currently coming out of Nyeri, Kenya. This coffee is grown on small family owned farms located on the southeastern slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range the Tetu Division of Nyeri County, Kenya. There are 465 registered plantations in the area that are typically around one acre in size. Other subsistence crops are usually grown on these plots, such as banana and macadamia. During harvest, farmers deliver their ripe coffee cherries to the Thageini Factory which performs all of the coffee’s wet milling and drying. After the drying process, which typically takes two to three weeks, the coffee is transported to the Sagana Dry Mill in the Kirinyaga District, for dry milling. The Thageini Factory is part of the Aguthi Farmers Co-operative Society, of which three other regional wet mills are a part.
The coffee’s dry aroma immediately brought to mind notes of toasted coconut, pear and brown sugar. In the cup, the coconut note continues to feature prominently, but is joined by a complex chorus of blackberry, sun-dried tomato, poached pear and tangerine. A delicate body and juicy finish feature in concert, and are fused together by a sparkling acidity reminiscent of fresh fruit juice.
